Adobe Photoshop CS3 Tools, Shortcuts, Settings, Instructions and Tips

Handy Tools & Shortcuts

Opening a New Photoshop File & Page Settings
(Applies to Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 also)

·      Open up a new page using  - File / New Option
·      Set the Preset Option in the menu to International Paper and Size to A4
·      Set the Resolution to 200 Pixels / inch (Minimum)
·      Set the Colour mode to RGB Color / 8 Bit and Background Contents to White
·      Start adding images / texts and effects to your graphic page.


Separating an Image from the Background
(Applies to Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 also)

·      To Start with make sure you have selected the Correct Background Layer /  Image to work on from the layer panel on the right hand side of the Photoshop Home Screen.
·      Select the Polygonal Lasso tool http://livedocs.adobe.com/en_US/Photoshop/10.0/images/P_PolygonSelect_Lg_N.pngfrom the Tool Bar
·      Click on the Border of the image that you want to separate  to set the starting point
·       Draw an outline of the image that you want to separate by clicking the mouse at short lines until you reach the starting point
·      When you finish, join the outline to the starting point to see the image highlighted  .
·      Press Ctrl+Alt+D to apply Feather Radius (To Smoothen the Edges of the separated Image)
·      Enter Value 3, Click OK
·      Press Ctrl+Alt+J to separate the image from the background layer.
·      Now you should see a new seperated layer of the image added to the Layer Panel
·      Press Ctrl+S to save the document in .PSD format (PSD - Photoshop Document with Layers for future Editing)



Changing Background Colour of the Image
(Applies to Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 also)

·      Open up a new page using  - File / New Option
·      Set the Preset Option in the menu to International Paper and Size to A4
·      Set the Resolution to 200 Pixels / inch (Minimum)
·      Set the Colour mode to RGB Color / 8 Bit and Background Contents to White
·      Drag the Seperated Image to the centre of the new page
·      Press Ctrl+T to enable the Frame Buttons
·      Hold Down Shift + Alt keys  and drag the right top corner button to enlarge or fit the image to the page proportionately
·      Select the Background layer from the layer Panel
·      Use the Background Colour Picker from the tool bar to choose the desired colour
·      Go to Edit/Fill option  and select Use/Background Colour from the drop down menu, Click OK
·      Press Ctrl+S to save the document in .PSD format (PSD - Photoshop Document with Layers for future Editing)




Cropping / Resizing Images
(Applies to Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 also)

·      Select the Crop Tool Crop Tool from the Tool Bar
·      Now, drag the Crop Tool to draw rectangular area to select part of image that you want to Keep

·      Press Enter Key to apply the crop / resize effect to the image.
·      Press Ctrl+S to save the document

Rotating Images
·      Open up a new page using  - File / New Option
·      Drag the Image to the New Page
·      Press Ctrl+T to enable the Frame Buttons
·      Move the mouse cursor outside the Image to enable the Rotate Tool
·      Rotate the Image at the desired level
·      Press Enter to apply


Applying Effects
·      Select the layer for the Image / Text that you want the effect to be applied to
·      Go to Layer / Layer Style
·    Select the Style from the menu and adjust the parameters according to the desired levels.
·    Click OK to apply

Applying Texture Effects & Filters
·      Select the Layer  (Background / Image) that you want the effect to be applied to
·      Go to Filter,  Select the Filter that you wish to apply
·      Preview  and Adjust the parameters to the desired level
·      Click OK to apply the Effect
